Salares is a sleepy white washed Moorish village situated at the foot of the Almijara mountains. At a height of 579 metres the village is just over an hours drive from Malaga Airport and 30 minsutes from the coast. .It lies on the road from Archez and Canillas de Albaida to Sedella which is a little further up the mountain. It has a population of 400 inhabitants some of whom are residents from northern Europe attracted by the quiet and very Spanish feel of the village. Salares is picturesque with steep, winding streets that are closed to traffic. The Natural Park is literally on the doorstep and so this is great country for lovers of walking and wildlife.
The parish church of Santa Ana is built in Mudejar style on the previous site of a mosque whose minaret has been preserved.
In the village there is a supermarket, a post office, a farmacia, one bar, a school (with 8 pupils!) and a garage. The doctor visits the village twice a week. They have five fiestas every year. The official population is 179. It is a great place for anyone wanting peace and quiet and the opportunity to integrate into the local Spanish community.
