The village of Archez is situated on the banks of the river Sayalonga. It is hidden in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara and is at a height of 435 metres above sea level. It is just over and hours drive from Malaga airport and 25 minutes drive to the coast at Torre del Mar. The population of this delightful and traditional Spanish hill village is around 400 people.
Sites of interest include the parish church of "Nuestra Señora de la Encarnacíon" which is a 16th century Mudéjar building and is located in the centre of the village. It has a minaret dating from the 13th century preserved in perfect condition.
Though still quiet and very Spanish, Archez has recently become increasingly popular with northern Europeans wishing to move to the area. As a result there are now some good restaurants including Thai and Moorish cuisine. There is a primary school, a health centre and a bank and on Wednesday mornings a small village market It is also possible to walk to Canillas de Albaida which has more facilities to offer and only a short drive takes you to Competa.
