For the past few months Competa has been buzzing with election fever in the build up to and aftermath of the local elections. Local elections take place in May every four years and always generate a lot of interest in a small community like ours, but this year has been a little different.
We were all fascinated to learn that our young and popular local priest, Jose Luis Torres Gutierrez, had resigned from his vocation in order to stand for election as mayor of Competa – quite a change of career! Anyway, as expected he was elected with a big majority and is now a very visible and cheery figure around the village. But we do wonder who is going to play the part of Jesus next year in the Easter Passion Play now that Jose Luis has turned to politics!
You might be interested to know that if you own a property here then you have the right to vote in the local elections. All you need to do is register with the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) which is a very quick and simple process. The next elections will be in 2011. |
