NIE stands for número de identidad de extranjero or foreigner's identification number. This is a vital piece of paper that you'll need to obtain if you're about to buy a house in Spain . Most importantly you won't be able to go ahead with the purchase of your new home until you have it. The NIE is also needed before you can enter into a contract for the supply of electricity, water or a telephone line so you can see how important it is.

Fortunately it's not a difficult process. For a reasonable fee your asesoria (legal advisor) can help you with this but you will need to be there in person when the application is made to the local police station. We are also happy to help you or you can do the whole thing yourself it is that simple! All you need are two copies of your passport and of the NIE application form. The application will take you just half an hour to do and the NIE certificate will be ready for collection from the police station in a couple of weeks, so if you're about to buy a house don't leave it too late!
