Almayate is a small village which feels a world away from its close neighbour Torre del Mar which is a bustling seaside resort. It grew up as a result of the need for labour for the quarries which provided the materials for the building of Malaga Cathedral. The area now concentrates on agriculture including fruit and vegetable, flowers and sugar cane. The main part of the village lies a little inland whilst on the other side of the coast road and beyond the agricultural fields is the very Spanish residential seaside part of Almayate which sits right on the beach.

Near the mouth of the River Velez is an interesting archaeological site containing Phoenician remains (8th-6th centuries B.C.).
